Hearing Safety with Fireworks

  1. Fireworks Safety

The 4th of July is right around the corner and you know what that means, fireworks! Who doesn’t love sitting with their friends and family enjoying a beautiful firework show? The professional firework shows often leave us speechless and of course we all have our friends who enjoy putting on a backyard firework show. While these can be really fun, they can also be very loud meaning that our ears can suffer from the repetitive loud booms.

Wondering the effects of fireworks on your ears? Fireworks can reach up to 175 decibels and at 85 decibels ears can be damaged to the point of permanent hearing loss if exposed for a longer period of time. Depending on how close you are to the source of sound for fireworks, hearing loss can be permanent.  To make sure you are protected from permanent hearing loss this 4th of July, follow these firework hearing safety tips.

  • Regardless of whether you are putting off professional fireworks or recreational fireworks, use ear protectors.
  • When watching the town firework show, make sure you and your family are sitting no closer than 200 feet away from the fireworks. The further away you are from the source of the loud booms, the better for your ears, especially for children.
  • To make it ‘cool’ for children to protect their hearing, make sure you also wear hearing protection. You can purchase simple foam ear protectors or buy custom ear buds. Another option is using headphones that are not plugged into anything as a cool way to protect ears.

Protecting your hearing is paramount but also making sure you protect your child’s hearing is even more important. Make sure you enjoy fireworks without risking damaging your ears by sitting far away from the source of them and also using hearing protectors.
